Sylvan Learning™ was founded in 1979 by W. Berry Fowler, who wanted to provide personalized tutoring and educational services to struggling students. With a focus on individualized instruction, Fowler's business quickly grew from a single location in Portland, Oregon, to multiple locations throughout the United States.
In 1985, Sylvan began franchising its education model, allowing passionate entrepreneurs to join the mission of transforming lives through comprehensive learning. By 2003, Sylvan Learning had expanded globally with over 1,200 locations in 10 countries. Today, we have over 710 locations worldwide and continue growing our network of franchisees dedicated to making a difference in their communities.
